Important Vinyls

SPIN THE WHEEL

What is a vinyl? Not only something people collect or chemical compounds put together to create a disk that produces sound.Vinyls can bring people together and even introduce people new artist. But most importantly supports artist in a differnt way. These days the vast majority of the music we experience is stored digitally. The internet has not only changed the way we consume music, but also how much music we consume, and it has changed the music itself. Somewhat counterintuitively, vinyl has recently experienced a resurgence in popularity, seeing a year-on-year increase in sales for the last decade. According to the RIA, vinyl record sales increased by almost 30% in 2020.

Here are some ways vinyls can be better than digital:
Even with the new era of streaming and music streaming vinyl's are stronger than ever.

Dynamic Range

Vinyl records are an analog medium. They store audio information as tiny undulating grooves in the surface of the vinyl record. Those grooves actually look like the sound waves they represent; in other words, they are analogous to the sound waves, hence the name analog. To listen to the audio on a vinyl record, you place it on a turntable, which spins the record at a certain speed. A stylus or needle at the end of a tonearm is placed in the groove, and it wiggles with the undulations as the record moves beneath it. Those wiggles are converted to an audio signal, which is then amplified and played on speakers or headphones.By contrast, digital-audio files store audio in the digital realm. An analog audio signal enters an analog-to-digital converter (ADC), which converts the analog signal into digital information—a series of 1s and 0s. Without getting too technical, the analog audio waveform is "sampled" many times per second, recording the instantaneous level of the waveform as it rises and falls using several digital bits to encode the level value of each sample.

Visual Features

There are also many visual aspects to the vinyl condition. Typically, there is artwork on the front and back of the jacket. Some covers become timeless, pervasive cultural images, such as Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures, designed by Peter Saville. The jackets may be gatefold, i.e. they may unfold or open like a book, and may reveal a large image across the entire unfolded jacket, such as the inner image of lightning-faced David Bowie in Aladdin Sane. There is also artwork on inner sleeves, as well as anything inserted in the jacket. Additionally, the polybag may also be used as a canvas. The Allah-Las place signature logo sticker artwork on theirs, for example. Sometimes the inner sleeves are also the lyric sheets or where inner artwork is placed. The label offers yet another opportunity for artwork.

A New Experience

We won’t pretend there aren’t advantages to online shopping. Digital retail has made a wider range of goods available to us at lower prices, all from the comfort of our homes. However, shopping from your smartphone or computer doesn’t give the same experience as going to a store. Although you can find vinyl available on Amazon and other large physical retailers, the format has been kept alive by independent record stores. Fans of these establishments are passionate and loyal to them. You can spend hours perusing the collections, holding the vinyl records in your hand, and studying the artwork and track listings.
